Obituary for Anne Ariss (Kohuch)

Anne’s family are saddened to announce the passing of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the age of 102 years, at Valleyview Care Centre, Brandon, MB.

Anne was born July 18, 1920, the third eldest of 13 children, to Alex and Nellie Kohuch at Mears, MB in the RM of Rossburn. Anne attended school until grade 8 and then soon went to work as domestic help to area families. While employed at the home of Arnet and Agnes Thompson at Lavinia, she met and married George Ariss of Isabella on October 7, 1941. Anne and George farmed at Isabella, and there four children were born: Gerald, Donnie, Edith and Hazel. In 1952, they purchased a farm at Crandall and here their youngest child, Carrol, was born in 1960. In 1973, they sold the farm and moved to Virden. Anne worked at the Westman Lodge and volunteered with several organizations. In 1985, they retired to Brandon and in 1989, they moved to Lions Manor, where Anne resided until recently.

Anne had an incredible ability to make friends and remember people. She was a scribe who maintained a diary for over 70 years in which she recorded births, marriages, deaths and other notable events on a daily basis. She also scrapbooked and maintained a large collection of photo albums and community History Books. She loved reading newspapers, gardening, quilting and keeping in touch with family and friends, and did so until failing health ended her ability to do so.

Anne was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and of her family, and she will be dearly missed by all.

Anne was predeceased by her husband George in 1996, son Donnie in 1964, son-in-law Ken Stephenson in 2015, daughter-in-law Sherry Ariss in 2020, parents, seven brothers, two sisters, and many others of her large extended Kohuch and Ariss families.

Anne is survived by her son Gerald Ariss; daughters Edith Stephenson, Hazel (Mike) Rudniski and Carrol Ariss; grandchildren Jason Rudniski, Jennifer Rudniski and Marcia (Ted) Gerlock; great grandchildren Brittney and Tyler Gerlock and Rene Kells; sisters Stella Andrusiak and Mildred Sakundiak; brother Terry (Joanne) Kohuch; sisters-in-law Irene and Eleanor Kohuch; and numerous generations of nieces and nephews.

Anne will be laid to rest in the Ariss family plot at Crandall Cemetery. A service to honour Anne’s life will be held at a later date.

Donations in memory of Anne may be made to a charity of your choice.

The family wish to acknowledge all those persons who maintained contact with Anne during her long life, and to those care givers who assisted her during her final days.
