Obituary for Barbara Blackmon
To know Her Was to Love Her.
Mary Barbara Louise Blackmon. October 15, 1957 - January 17, 2022.
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Blackmon. She was a bright spark of light, love, and laughter in this world, and will be deeply missed by many. Barb is survived by her loving husband Greg Blackmon, children Steven Lowdon (Lisa Plumb and granddaughters Taylor and Ashley), Breanna (Levi) and Myles (Kelsey) Blackmon, stepson Charles Blackmon and older brothers Larry (Jessie), David (Lorrie) and Daniel Roulette, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. She is preceded in death and welcomed into spirit by her beloved mother, Lorraine Lillian Thompson Kolosinski and father Steve Kolosinski.
Barb grew up on the family farm in Alonsa, later moved to Portage la Prairie and settled in the Brandon area for the past 40 years.
In between raising a family and homesteading her acreage north of Alexander, Barb ran a home-based daycare, worked at Canadian Tire, Dufresne and Al’s Corner Store in Alexander.
She loved meeting new people to find out their story, listening to Johnny Reid, hitting up yard sales, thrift stores, hosting and attending family dinners, riding her Harley and cuddling her cats Eddie and Tucker. She gardened, pickled and canned and loved attending Tribal Days and The Pavilions.
She enjoyed night caps with friends, fire pits, baseball, camping, boating, and firing off her 12-guage shot gun, hitting targets like nobody’s business. Barb loved listening to fiddlers, watching jiggers step-it-out, and ripping through mud bogs on the quad.
She gave everyone she knew an experience, wanting them to try something new, and created fun all around her. She was uplifting, and made people feel free to be themselves. She always listened empathetically and without judgement, allowing people the space to find their own answers and be their authentic self in her presence.
To laugh with her, a person felt like they were in on the inside joke. She was safe, welcoming, and felt like home.
Prairie born and raised, Barb knew the wind, the sun, the dirt and the star-filled nights only experienced in the country. She will be remembered for her beauty, infectious laugh, quick wit and her deep and abiding love for family and friends.
