Obituary for Barbara Jean Zaiser

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barbara Jean Zaiser, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbour, on March 7, 2022 in Brandon, Manitoba.

Barb was born on November 21, 1938 in Golden Prairie, SK to Pearl and Edgar Cook and was the youngest of three siblings. She lived on the family homestead for eighteen years before meeting the love of her life, Harold Paul Zaiser. Barb and Harold were married in 1957 and moved to Whitewood, SK for a brief period, eventually setting down permanent roots in Brandon, MB.

Barb’s time in the workforce took many forms including employment as a sales associate at Woolco (now Walmart) for several years prior to her joining the housekeeping department at Brandon General Hospital and finally Fairview Personal Care Home, where she remained until she retired to spend more time with family.

Having more free time on her hands, Barb took up many hobbies throughout the next chapter of her life. She enjoyed knitting, crochet, baking all kinds of delicious goodies, and painting - where she took anything she could find and turned it into a blank canvas: rocks, oars, saw blades, and mailboxes.

Barb loved volunteering around Brandon and spent several years working diligently on committees related to her children’s activities, and at George Fitton School, assisting teachers in the classroom and extra-curricular activities. Her volunteering continued long after her grandchildren graduated. To say that Barb was well-known in her community is quite an understatement; when out on one of her adventures, you could always count on her running into someone she knew or more truthfully, was about to make their acquaintance.

Barb is survived by her sons Dale (Victoria, BC); Terry and daughter-in-law Traci (Thunder Bay, ON); son-in-law Kevin Rose (Brandon, MB); grandchildren Jason Rose (Brandon, MB); Chris Zaiser (Thunder Bay, ON); Brittany Heron and her husband Bryce (Round Hill, NS); great grandsons Reid and Nicholas Rose (Manitoba), and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents Pearl and Edgar Cook, husband Harold Zaiser, daughter Heather Rose, sister Grace Coakes, and brother James Cook.

The Celebration of Barb’s Life will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North, Brandon, MB. A graveside service will follow at Whitewood Cemetery, Whitewood, SK at 2:00 p.m. (CST), where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that everyone consider doing a kind gesture for someone in the thoughtful spirit and remembrance of Barb.
