Obituary for Betty Nelson (Smith)

Betty Nelson, age 70 years, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023 in Brandon.

Born December 12, 1952 in Brandon to Joe and Grace Smith, Betty attended Earl Oxford School. She loved playing basketball and volleyball in her younger days, and would tell stories about climbing the Brandon water tower with her friends while hanging out at the East End Community Centre. Betty’s mom opened one of the first daycare centers in Brandon, the Rainbow Daycare, and Betty worked there alongside her mom. Betty loved working with children, ensuring their growth and development.

Betty married Harold Nelson at Trinity United Church in Brandon on September 15, 1973. During the early days of their marriage, they lived in the White Swan Trailer Court before moving to Douglas. Moving to different places around the province throughout the years, they returned to Brandon in 1997.

Betty and her husband were long-time foster parents for Central Manitoba Child and Family Services. She was dedicated to fostering kids. Betty was an amazing cook, working alongside Harold managing hotels and restaurants over the years. She was a hard worker and enjoyed a challenge.

Betty and the family would go camping every summer. Betty and Harold would get seasonal spots and be at their camper from May Long weekend until late September. Betty loved being amongst the oak trees and looking after her various plants and flowers. She also loved watching Hallmark Channel movies and her favorite TV show, Heartland. Betty collected both stamps and coins. When it came to music, Betty loved to listen to Elvis Presley, Tina Turner and Celine Dion. But most of all, Betty loved being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her husband Harold Nelson; daughters Leona and Lisa; grandchildren Leah, Louisa, Nova, Latifa, Sierra, Emma, Austin and Callum; great-grandchildren Ronell, Sophia, Atticus, Joseph, Julianna, Trey, Jackson, Marley and Adrian; siblings Joy, Donald, Richard, Wendy and Kimberly; and many extended family members.

She was predeceased by her eldest son Justin Nelson and an unborn son; parents Joe and Grace Smith and stepmother Lorraine; parents-in-law Joe and Mae Nelson; and best friend Jacquie Pashe.

We love you and we will cherish our memories with you forever. Thank you for being a wonderful wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
