Obituary for Sonya Karashowsky (Tuer)

KARASHOWSKY: With deep sadness we announce the passing of Sonya Pauline Karashowsky (nee Tuer) on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Sonya was born in Brandon on November 8, 1933. She attended David Livingston School and St. Michael’s Academy. She worked at Brandon Packers and Perth’s Dry Cleaning then moved to Savannah, Georgia to help brother Bill and Anna with their children. In the early 1960s, Sonya spent a couple of years in Bermuda with girlfriends working at the Princess Hotel. Life was fun! She even ended up on the album cover of the hotel’s band’s record. On a visit home she met a handsome young man selling apples on Rosser Avenue. She had a date with him that night and after a brief courtship, Sonya and Bill were married in 1962. The next years were spent lovingly raising her boys and looking after her parents. Sonya was an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian National Home and spent many years working at Obermaiers. She was a hard worker, but most of all she enjoyed being with people. Sonya loved having coffee with her friends, trips to the casino, visiting family at the coast, her grand dog Dixie, spending time at Clear Lake, and a good drink of scotch. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Dan (Susan) and Paul (Nelia), brothers Bill and Russell, sister Tillie and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Michael and Sarah Tuer, brother Walter and sisters Betty and Virginia. Everyone that met Sonya loved her immediately. Her warmth, kindness, class and elegance will be remembered by all. A private graveside service was held on Monday, June 29, 2020 at the Brandon Cemetery. The Very Rev. Michael Skrumeda officiated. Donations in memory of Sonya may be made to the BRHC Foundation for Palliative Care, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
