Obituary for Clifford Wentworth Ramcharan

Clifford Ramcharan, age 96, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2022, at the Brandon Regional Health Center, with family at his side. He is survived by his wife Beverley, his children Sharon (Tom Colina), Lisette (Sean Sunderland), Andrea, and Ian (Tammie Erickson), his grandchildren Alana, Nicholas, Clare, Fiona, Amita and Brandon, his sister Pamela Alleyne and many nieces and nephews.

Clifford was born in Balmain Couva, Trinidad on January 3, 1926, the third of eight children. Soon after graduating from high school, he began his teaching career at Naparima College, San Fernando. In 1955, he helped to found Iere High School in Siparia, Trinidad, the first government approved co-ed high school on the Island. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1959 majoring in Geography and English. In 1962, he spent one year at the University of the West Indies getting his diploma in education. While practice teaching in Jamaica, he met his future wife, Beverley Luck, a mathematics teacher at Knox College. In 1966, Clifford, Bev and one year old Sharon immigrated to Brandon, Manitoba. Clifford taught first at Brandon Collegiate and then at Crocus Plains High School until his retirement in 1995.

Clifford was well-known and loved by generations of students as a patient, wonderful and inspiring teacher. They were captivated by his memorable razor blade flicking and card trick skills honed from an early age.

In his youth, Clifford excelled at cricket, table tennis and badminton. He had a keen ear for music and taught himself how to play the guitar. His only failing was when Bev tried to teach him how to play the piano. That pursuit soon came to an abrupt end. Well-read and intellectually curious, he always had a couple of books on the go. He was a life-long chess and bridge player, and he and Bev took pride in completing the Globe and Mail cryptic crossword in record time every day. He also loved watercolor painting and photography. After retiring, he took up pottery in earnest, turning out bowls, cups and teapots, all of which he gave away to friends and family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Habeeb and the entire renal unit team as well as Cliff’s wonderful nurses at the Brandon hospital. Flowers are gratefully declined. There will be no funeral service.

Cliff’s approach to life is summed up by his favorite quote:

For Yesterday is but a Dream
And Tomorrow is only a Vision
But Today well lived makes
Every Yesterday a dream of Happiness
And Every Tomorrow a vision of Hope
