Dorothy passed away peacefully on March 9, 2020 at 94 years of age in Brandon, Manitoba. She is survived and sadly missed by husband of 72 years, Gordon Thompson, their three children Don (Rosalynn), Valerie (Gord), and Drew (Jacquie), six grandchildren Jonina, Melanie, Mark, Scott, Matthew, and Christine, and seven great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was born in Morris, Manitoba, the youngest of seven children. She was predeceased by her parents Julius and Lydia Locht, her three sisters Elsie, Hannah, Martha, and her three brothers Albert, Edward, and Christopher. Her childhood years included living on a farm and attending school in Morris, followed by family moves to St. Jean, Headingly, and Winnipeg, Manitoba. After graduating high school at Daniel Mac and completing stenography courses at a business college, Dorothy met her future husband Gord while starting her career at CKY radio station. They married in June 1947. Early married life included a move from Winnipeg to Toronto with CBC, followed by a move back to Winnipeg where Dorothy and Gord settled and raised their three children. In 1998 Dorothy and Gord moved to Brandon, Manitoba where they spent their remaining retirement years together.
Dorothy lived a full life surrounded by her family, relatives, and many friends. She will be fondly remembered as an avid gardener, berry picker, and wonderful cook. Her talent in the kitchen was cherished at family Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations. Dorothy was active in the Baptist church, community, and enjoyed socializing with friends at her sewing and bridge clubs. She launched and co-ran an office administrative support business for seven years out of her home, followed by working in office administrative roles at local provincial government offices. Dorothy and Gord shared a love of the outdoors and travel, including summer family camping trips with their trailer, followed later by memorable years at their summer cottage in Lake of the Woods, Ontario. They also enjoyed winter snowbird escapes to Honolulu, Palm Desert, and Victoria, B.C. Dorothy was blessed with good health extending through most of her senior years and experienced some wonderful and memorable adventures travelling the world with Gord.
Her family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, as well as Dr. Duncan, for their passionate care provided to Dorothy. We also wish to thank the management, staff and residents at Riverheights Terrace for their ongoing care and support.
A funeral service is being planned for a later date.
