Obituary for Douglas Roy Robertson

Douglas Roy Robertson, born March 11, 1940, passed away at his home in Brandon on Thursday, January 26, at the age of 82 years.

Doug was predeceased by his daughter Melissa, son Vernon, father Clifford, mother Ruth and sister Marjorie.

Douglas was born in Brandon to Ruth and Clifford Robertson of Margaret, MB. He attended school in Pinkham, Margaret and Minto. He worked on the family farm and helped out with other farmers until he left to join the Air Force. Doug was stationed at Rivers Air Force Base until 1965.

Doug met Wilma Opperman who he married on February 23, 1963. In 1965, he purchased a farm at 10-6-19 near Minto, MB. Here he farmed for 48 years, while raising a family of four: Darvin was born May 17, 1964, Marilyn October 2, 1965, Melissa July 24, 1971 and Vernon November 14, 1972.

Doug was a very active member of the community with involvement in the Minto Legion, Minto Forresters, curling, playing ball with the Minto Choir Boys, Teatart Turtles, member of the Minto Hall, councillor and then Reeve for the RM of Whitewater. When not involved with his family activities, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, which he did with Darvin, Vernon and many other friends and family.

In 2003, it was time to hang up his farming boots and, along with Wilma, moved to Sidney, MB. In Sidney, he became involved with Sidney Hall as a board member, curling and golfing in Austin, going for coffee and helping out his son, Vernon. Doug worked on a potato farm near Carberry, driving tractor, combine or whatever was available to drive.

On October 14, 2019, the move to Brandon took place. As mobility became more of an issue, curling was played less, but he enjoyed attending the rink to watch. He also enjoyed playing crib, cards and especially dominoes with friends, family and mostly his wife of 59 years, Wilma.

The family will cherish the memory of Doug, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa as we move forward with our lives. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his wife Wilma, son Darvin (Sabrina Munsaram), daughter Marilyn (Rick) Reimer, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The Celebration of Douglas’s Life will take place at the Minto Hall, Minto, Manitoba on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Harvey Hurren and Marianne Olfrey, DLM officiating. A reception will follow.

Interment will take place at a later date at Margaret Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Douglas may be made to the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, Diabetes Canada, or Brandon Seniors for Seniors.
