Obituary for Eleanor Joyce Birkhan

BIRKHAN: Eleanor Joyce, age 75 years, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Eleanor was born and raised in Dauphin, MB. She trained to become a Registered Nurse in Winnipeg at the Children’s Hospital and following graduation, she began her career in Dauphin. She met and married her husband Waldy in 1967, and soon after built a house and made it their family home in Forrest, MB. The majority of her nursing career was spent at Brandon General Hospital, primarily on A2 Ortho at the Assiniboine Centre. In 2000, Eleanor shifted her focus and joined the Management Team at Hillcrest Place for 9 years. Finally, she spent 4 years transitioning to full-time retirement, working casually with Public Health. Friends and community were very important to Eleanor. She supported many through the difficult journeys they each faced, always able to bring a smile and put people at ease. Her ability to communicate with people of all ages was second to none. Eleanor was especially fond of children and the excitement she could always create in their presence. If it was ten minutes or ten years, not often was one’s interaction with Eleanor forgotten; she made it impossible to not feel loved in her presence. And her laugh… the unforgettable laugh that made anyone that knew her very aware when she arrived and with its infectious quality, quickly had all in stitches. Her witty one liners and crazy songs she loved to share made for endless joy. Eleanor will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years, Waldy; children Todd (Kyla) and Erin; the absolute apple of her eye, grandson Adair; and numerous family and friends that she held dear to her heart. She was predeceased by her father George Scott, mother Opal Scott and brother Bonnar Scott. The Celebration of Eleanor’s Life will take place at a later date. Special thank you to all that provided care and support along Eleanor’s journey. Donations in memory of Eleanor may be made to Westman Manitoba Cancer Centre, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
