Obituary for Gary Ray Demkey

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Demkey, age 71, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Sunday, May 7, 2023 with family by his side.

Gary was born July 15, 1951 and grew up in the Pine Creek area where he began his schooling in Elmwood, which was a one-room schoolhouse that he had to walk two miles to attend. He continued his education in Austin, and then started working at Carnation Foods in Carberry. Gary then furthered his education when he was given the opportunity to attend college, where he received his Millwright Heavy Duty Industrial Mechanic Certificate.

After marrying Janet McKeand in 1976, they moved to Alberta for two years where he worked at Halliburton as a mechanic. When they returned to Douglas in 1978, he became a full-time farmer.

Gary was a dedicated farmer who was out in the fields at the crack of dawn and worked tirelessly until late at night. He always ensured that his machinery was serviced and ready for the field.

He loved fishing, hunting, camping, sporty GM cars, good friends, and his pets. Gary also took pleasure in seeing the elk and deer wandering around his farm.

Gary was a pilot who enjoyed the solitude and relaxation of flying his own plane around the area. He also spent as much time as a farmer could at Lake of the Prairies, where he enjoyed fishing, playing cards and sitting around the campfire.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Janet, brother Richard (Dorothy), sister Dianna Tarko, mother-in-law Meryl McKeand, sister-in-law Elaine Sinclair, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Service was held on Friday, May 12, 2023 at Memories Chapel in Brandon, MB followed by a private interment at Madford Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Gary may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6.
