Obituary for Gertrude Victoria Brown

Gertrude Victoria Brown, age 96 years, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Fairview Home.

Born August 20, 1926 to Harry and Minnie Elstow, Gert grew up in Brandon, attending Earl Haig School and then worked at Wheat City Tannery and Eaton’s.

Gert married Lyall Brown on August 10, 1961, and together they worked side-by-side on the dairy farm at Chater. Considering Gert grew up a city girl, she jumped into her new role as farm wife with great gusto. In the summer you would find her either baling hay or painting fences (it was important to Gert to keep the farm looking good).

Gert’s interests included her husband, girls and grandkids; always taking an interest in, or wanting to help with, whatever they were doing. She was very much a behind the scenes person, in church Gert was in the kitchen organizing meals or helping wherever she was needed.

Gert will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Heather (Larry) Fast and Carla (Art) Penner; grandchildren Nolan and Randi; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Lyall; parents Henry and Minnie Elstow; siblings Frances Elstow, Irene Elstow, Eileen (Ed) Stanton, Charles Elstow, Louis Elstow and Peggy (Frank) McKay.

The Celebration of Gertrude’s Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North, Brandon on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Fast, Art Penner, Nolan Penner, Bob McKay, Rod Thorleifson and Scott Gurr.

Donations in memory of Gertrude may be made to The Gideons International in Canada, PO Box 3619, Guelph, Ontario, N1H 7A2.
