Obituary for Irene Helen Dyck

DYCK: Irene Helen, age 73 years, passed away on Monday August 31, 2020 at 5:30 a.m. at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Although the last three months of her journey with cancer were difficult, she passed away peacefully.

Irene was born in Leamington, Ontario to John and Margaret Warkentin on May 8, 1947; she was the youngest of five children. She attended UMEI High School in Leamington and moved to Winnipeg to attend CMBC where she studied music, one of her passions. She loved to sing, conduct choirs and coordinate the worship music each week at church. Her hymnal at home was full of reference notes and background stories that she would share with the congregation when she led the singing on Sundays. Psalm 47:6 reads; “Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises!” We are confident she is now doing this herself in the presence of Jesus!

Irene worked as a clerk for 20 years in various departments of the Brandon Hospital. She ended her career as a volunteer coordinator, a position that held a special place in her heart. Irene loved to volunteer. She coordinated food and volunteers for many annual events including the Brandon MCC Relief Sale and the MCC Cycle Clear Lake fundraisers. She had a passion for food, including searching for new recipes, cooking and coordinating meals for friends and church events. Crock pot potlucks became a favourite event at church that she would look forward to each month. She also loved flowers, reading and processing the fruit and vegetables from the large garden she and Jake tended.

Irene was happily married to husband Jake for 46 years. Her children Kevin (Tracy) and David (Sandra Wiebe), and her grandchildren Camille, Peyton, Greta, Reuben, Aaron and Luther remember her as a “motherly”, caring person who shared her love through acts of giving. When she would visit, she always brought fresh baking (usually cinnamon buns!), and homemade canned goods. And when they would visit her, she always had a favourite meal or dessert planned to make them feel special. Irene is also survived by her brother Walt (Lydia), brother Hank (Helen), sister Elsie and brother Ernie (Elma). She was predeceased by her parents John and Margaret and brother-in-law George (Elsie).

The family would like to thank all of Irene’s friends and the caring and compassionate medical professionals who have provided care for her over the many years during her journey with cancer.
