CORNETT: It is with profound sadness that we announce James “Jim” Cornett, age 74 years, loving husband and father, passed away at Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday May 15, 2021. Jim was born on March 23, 1947 in Brandon, MB to Stanley and Maude Cornett. He came from humble beginnings and found it personally important to attain an education and work hard and that success would follow. He married his soulmate Rosemary in 1972 while attending a summer course at Brandon University. Jim continued his studies at Brandon University where he received two degrees and pursued a career in education. He quickly progressed to principle at several schools in Brandon and area over his 25-year career. Jim was an excellent teacher; it was his passion and true calling in life. Teachers often discuss about born teachers and trained teachers. Jim was a born teacher. His success came from his own unique approach to learning, his personality, and his urge to be well-planned and organized. Jim was a distinct advocate for those with learning disabilities and students who needed extra support to be a part of a scholastic experience. He was always there for students with a firm reminder of responsibility or a kind pat on the back. He also shared in the enjoyment of his students whether it was preparing for a Christmas concert, soccer game with another school or a field trip. He was a well-loved and respected educator. Jim was also an avid gardener, who won many awards for landscaping and design. It was a hobby that brought calm to him and wonder to others at the serenity that he created in his yard. Jim loved to travel and was drawn to the warm sands of Mexico where many vacations were spent with family and friends. Early on he was quickly attracted to SCUBA diving and fell in love with the sport. Jim pursued significant training in SCUBA, attaining many different certifications including rescue diver and dive master status. Diving led to many lifelong friendships and adventures for Jim and his family. In retirement years, he was fortunate to spend winters in Manzanillo, Mexico where he and Rosemary made many friends from all over the world. Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. Everything he did was done with a family first approach. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all those who knew him. Jim was preceded in death by his father Stanley and mother Maude. He is survived by his wife Rosemary, son Justin, daughter-in-law Erin, granddaughter Ella, stepmother Gienia and sister Marie. The Celebration of Jim’s Life took place at Memories Chapel on Friday, May 21, 2021, officiated by Rev. Craig Miller and followed by interment at Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim may be made to Knox United Church, 451 – 18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5A9.
