Obituary for Joan Marie Duguid

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother, Joan Marie Duguid.

She passed away peacefully at the Crocus Court Personal Care Home in Roblin, Manitoba on Monday, October 17, 2022 at age 85 years.

Joan will be lovingly remembered by her three children Janice (Ken) Kennedy, Donna Auten and Bobby Duguid; seven grandchildren Sharmin (Shane) Calkins, Grant (Jolene) Brown, Traci (Ryan) Sizemore, Gordon (Jaime) Kennedy, Jimmy (Sharina) Kennedy and Alison (Mike) Pearl; seventeen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; brothers Doug (Helen) and Glenn, sisters-in-law Monique Duguid, Pat Duguid and Cathy Groves, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Robert and granddaughter Amanda Duguid.

Joan was born in the Souris Hospital on December 27, 1936 to Gordon and Flora Groves. The second of five children (Neil (deceased), Joan, Glen, Doug & Jim (deceased)), Joan spent her early years on the family farm in the Carroll district east of Souris. After attending Berbank and Carroll schools, Joan moved to Brandon in 1954, where she resided the rest of her life except for the last two years.

On June 30, 1955, Joan wed Robert “Bob” Duguid at the First Presbyterian Church in Brandon. Besides running a busy household of three children, all born within three and a half years, Joan also worked outside the home. She held various positions within the banking industry and then Red Carpet Food Services, retiring in 1999.

Joan loved family and was always a major presence at family gatherings as the chief cook, of which she was an excellent one. She especially loved babies and attending family members’ key milestones like graduations, weddings (along with her prerequisite fruit cake) and family reunions. She was always a willing worker when it came to family moves, come rain or shine!

Joan had a wide array of interests such as attending live theatre, movies and music concerts. She also enjoyed making wine, ceramics and jigsaw puzzles, watching baseball, playing golf, playing and watching curling, playing board and card games and dining out with friends and family.

Following her husband Bob’s passing in 2000, Joan very much enjoyed travelling the world with trips to Australia, Alaska, South Africa, China, Hawaii, Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, Costa Rica, Idaho, Minot Host fest, Mexico, Cuba, Arizona, Missouri, Montana, Texas, California and Russia. She also travelled to all 10 provinces in Canada, plus Caribbean, Panama Canal, Hawaiian and Baltic cruises.

We are going to miss her spirited outlook on life and loving support!

A private interment will take place at Brandon Cemetery. The Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North, Brandon on Monday, November 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Laura Hargrove officiating.

Donations in memory of Joan may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit B, 457 – 9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 1K2.
