Obituary for Lloyd Andrew Brooks

Lloyd Andrew Brooks peacefully passed away with family and friends by his side on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre after a lengthy illness.

Lloyd was born September 14, 1950 in Sydney, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia in the back of a cab along with his twin sister Norma. The newspaper article was titled “Stork beat Bryon’s”, which is the name of the taxi company. Lloyd and his sister Norma were the youngest of seven children with Lloyd being the only boy.

Lloyd went to school at St. John’s Academy. In 1962, Lloyd along with his mom and sisters Marion and Norma, moved to Calgary, AB, where he later attended SAIT Southern Institute of Technology.

After he finished SAIT, he worked as a mechanic and later became a service manager for Chrysler, where he won many awards for his outstanding performance to the company as well as his customers. He later worked for the city of Brandon as a Transit Driver before he eventually retired.

In his younger years he hated school, and his older sisters would have to take him to class every day, otherwise he never went, and they would find him down at the fire station. He was the only boy in the family, thus his grandmother spoiled him and, in her eyes, he could do no wrong. His mother also spoiled him.

Lloyd met Rose, his wife of almost 32 years, in Steinbach, MB and then spent the past 19 years settled in Brandon, MB.

Lloyd was very social and easily made many friends wherever he went. He loved a good Tims coffee and conversation.

Lloyd, in his career at Chrysler, taught a course called “Women on Wheels”, teaching women the basics of car maintenance. Lloyd loved cars even from a small boy. He made sure they were always well maintained and spotless. Around 2015, he joined the car club The Rebels, which he loved and enjoyed many happy times.

Lloyd was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Mary Irene Brooks, sisters Joan Elizabeth, Dorothy Ann, Carol Marie and grandmother Christie Avery. He is survived by his loving wife Rose Brooks, daughters Amanda Bridgeman and Kaileea Brooks, granddaughters Hailey-Lynn and Ryann, grandson Logan, sisters Susan Wehling (Mike), Marion Barisenkof (Peter) and Norma Pawlak, sisters and brothers-in-law Kathy Yonda (Wayne), Doug Hoey (Carol), Belinda McCallum (Glen), mother-in-law Pauline Hoey and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Kathy Yonda, Heather Clark, and Kerri Cameron for being there the last few days, staying with me and supporting me.

A Come and Go Memorial Reception will be held at the Co-Op Senior’s Complex Common Room (main level north door), 2105 Brandon Avenue, Brandon on Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Parking available on the west side of the building.

Donations in memory of Lloyd may be made to the charity of your choice.
