Obituary for Marjorie Lois Oliver

Marjorie Oliver passed away peacefully at Fairview Home on Monday, January 11, 2021 in her 91st year. She was the youngest of six children born to J.B. and Jenny Rome of Nesbit in 1930. She married George Oliver and moved to the Rounthwaite area where she resided on the family farm for over 50 years. Together they raised 4 children. As a hard-working farm wife, Mom successfully managed the household and raised her family prior to all of the modern conveniences. Mom was the original “meals on wheels” as she took hot 3 course meals out to the field during seeding/harvesting. She drove the grain truck in the fall, helped sort cattle, maintained the farm books and was full partner in every aspect of farm life. Although her freezer was full of home baking, she grew accustomed to opening empty containers as her children were adept at stealing and eating frozen cookies and dainties. As a farm wife, Mom maintained a large garden. Weeds shriveled at the sight of her trusty hoe, which the family thought should have a light installed on it! Always thrifty, Mom’s purchases were practical – never frivolous and she was fiercely independent. Mom and Dad spent many winters enjoying the sun and friends they met in Arizona. Following Dad’s passing, Mom moved to a condo in Brandon where her mission was walking her dog several times a day. We teased her that she was going to wear out the dog’s little feet. When Mom moved to Fairview Home, she adored her latest dog – a dementia dog that brought her joy. Marj was predeceased by her husband George (1998), grandson Chris Ross (2013), parents J.B. and Jenny Rome, siblings Ellen Howard, Bruce, Morely, Bev and Kaye Groves. Her memory will be cherished by her four children Lois (Bob) Ross, Glenda (Gerald) Speers, Brenda (Steven) Pennycook and George (Dianne) Oliver; eight grandchildren Vincent (Maribel), Garrett, Geoffrey (Meghan), Courtney, Ashley (James), Brittany (Garrett), Carlie (Bryan) and Katlin (Sean); eight great grandchildren Rexford, Rosabella, Logan, Gage, Kenna, Madison, Peyton and Evelyn; and Lucille Parsons, special family friend. Marjorie was laid to rest beside her husband in a private graveside service at Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Marjorie may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 457 – 9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 1K2 or to a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Fairview home for the care and support Mom received.
