Obituary for Robert Lionel Edmundson

EDMUNDSON: Robert “Bob” Lionel, age 61 years, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 7, 2022 after a battle with cancer.

Bob was born in Birtle, Manitoba on October 20, 1960, the 2nd of 4 children to Harry and Melina (nee Chartier) Edmundson. His early years were spent in St. Lazare and Birtle. In his youth, Bob was involved in boy scouts, played minor hockey and ball in Birtle, and later with the McAuley Blazers.

Following high school, he went into the workforce for a couple of years, before attending ACC, taking Business Administration. While at ACC, Bob played college hockey with the ACC Cougars.

After graduation in 1983, he was employed by Manitoba Telephone System. His career with MTS spanned 23 years, first as a telephone lineman in rural Manitoba, then moving into the Business Communications Dept. at MTS. While at MTS, he was proud to help implement and roll out 911 service across Manitoba.

Following MTS, Bob was employed by Murray’s GM, Prairie Mobile and Rocky Mountain Equipment. At the time of his passing, Bob was employed as the Outreach Coordinator for Dan Mazier, MP for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa. He was a natural at this position and loved to travel throughout the constituency with Dan, meeting new people or reconnecting with old acquaintances.

Bob and Lois met in 1982 and were married in 1985, making Brandon their home. Jesse was born in 1991, and Joel followed in 1993.

Bob passed his love of sports onto both his sons. Summers were spent camping across Western Canada or the States, or on the ball diamond with both boys playing ball. Winters were spent at hockey rinks across Manitoba, often with Bob either coaching or managing his sons’ hockey or baseball teams. So many wonderful family memories involved sports and many lifelong friends were made through both boys’ sports.

Bob was so proud of both his son’s accomplishments: Jesse receiving his Red Seal in carpentry and Joel winning the Stanley Cup in 2019 with the St. Louis Blues as well as seeing him play with the Montreal Canadiens, Bob’s favorite team, this spring.

Bob and Lois travelled extensively, either taking winter vacations to hot spots with friends or travelling across North America to watch Joel play hockey or visit Jesse in B.C. If they had the time they would travel by car, so they could take the scenic route and sightsee along the way. Many happy memories were made as a family travelling together.

Bob always had a smile on his face and a positive outlook on life. He will be missed by many.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife Lois and sons Jesse (Vanessa) and Joel (Ebony), mother Melina, brother Ken, sisters Rose (Ken) Ewbank and Lori (David) Giampa, mother-in-law Marie Huxley, sisters-in-law Joanne (Wayne) Nelson and Susan (Rob) Buchanan as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bob was predeceased by his father Harry Edmundson and father-in-law Jack Huxley.

A private Celebration of Bob’s Life was held at Knox United Church on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Interment took place at the Brandon Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Bob may be made to the Brandon Riverbank Inc., #1, 545 Conservation Drive, Brandon, MB R7A 7L8 or Birtle Minor Hockey, Box 548, Birtle, MB R0M 0C0.

The family would like to thank Dr. Visser for his compassionate care and the staff at CancerCare Manitoba – both Brandon and Winnipeg locations. We were so fortunate for the wonderful care they provided to Bob.
The family would also like to thank all their friends and family for all the support and assistance they provided over the last 18 months. Thank you.
