Obituary for Sophie Mary Norosky
It is with deep sorrow that we share that Sophie Norosky, formerly Sophie Wolski, passed away on February 2, 2020 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre in Brandon, Manitoba with her family by her side.
Sophie was our Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma who enjoyed a wonderful, long life with a spirit that endured even when her independence was no longer possible.
Sophie was born in Basswood, Manitoba on March 25, 1922. She lived in Onanole, Manitoba until 1954 when her family relocated permanently to Brandon, Manitoba. Our Mom was blessed with a love for life and she had a great sense of humour, and was always ready to share a joke. She was always happiest when surrounded by her family for whom she loved to cook and bake. She also had decorated wedding cakes for family weddings and once said, “When the day comes, just bury me with my cookbooks.”
Sophie had an intelligent mind, too. After raising their five children she earned her high school equivalency diploma and then attended classes at Brandon University to study sociology, psychology and the Polish language.
She enjoyed sports and was a great cheerleader for the Brandon Wheat Kings junior hockey team. She also enjoyed a fun round of golf and curled in winter bonspiels. Rehashing near misses afterwards with her friends was just as much fun for her. Fishing with her husband, Joseph, at Clear Lake, Manitoba was also at the top of her list of fun activities. Sophie loved nature and animals. Their cocker spaniel, Buffy, was a best buddy for many years. She was an avid gardener with a green thumb. She grew towering conifers and also created beautiful displays of African violets indoors, and favoured red begonias in her planters outdoors. She loved the springtime, always looking forward to a little bouquet of crocuses, and was especially fond of those elusive lady-slippers.
She was an accomplished seamstress which included sewing two daughters’ wedding gowns. She crocheted, knitted and did crafting for many years. She quilted beautifully and many of her relatives have received these works of art. Sophie also enjoyed sketching and painting in her earlier years.
Sophie loved to travel. She fulfilled her wish to go to The Holy Land. She also toured in Europe and cruised in the Caribbean and to Alaska. She and her husband, Joseph also spent many winters in Palm Springs, California and Palm Desert, California.
Sophie was active in her church where she was a very active member of the Catholic Women’s League for many years. She read scriptures during Masses and helped to prepare food for large events. She loved to sing and to dance at social functions. She made volunteer visits to residents in Personal Care Homes and at the Brandon General Hospital. She was also a volunteer for many years for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Sophie was central to her family ever since the loss of her husband, Joseph. We were so sad to see her health decline, but her devotion to her family never wavered and she left us with so much for which to be grateful. Thank you so much, Mom.
Sophie was born to her parents Frances and John Wolski of Basswood, Manitoba. She was the beloved wife of her predeceased husband, Joseph Norosky, and also grandma to her beloved late granddaughter, Kirsten Hurl. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Jim Bennett, and by her brothers and sisters, Maria Wolski; Ludwig Wolski; Mabel Wolski; Annie McFadden; Adam Wolski; Martha Chastko; Joe Wolski; Bill Wolski; Rose Krushelnisky and Caroline Tarnowski.
Sophie is survived by: her brother Tommy Wolsky (Calgary, AB); five children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Doris Bennett (Vancouver, BC), grandson Dean Bennett (Vancouver, BC); granddaughter Susan Jane Bennett (Toronto, ON); daughter Shirley Hurl and grandsons Paul Hurl and Kent Hurl (Vancouver, BC); daughter Teresa Norosky (Vancouver, BC); daughter Darlene Delavau, (son-in-law Laurence Delavau), grandson Chris (wife Lindsey) (Winnipeg, MB); son Wes Norosky, (daughter-in-law Suzy), grandson Scott (wife Nicky) and great grandchildren Lola and Joey (Brandon, MB); grandson Tyler (wife Sarah) and great grandchildren Chael and Colton (Brandon, MB). Sophie is also survived by many friends and her loving nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 327 – 4th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 3H1. Immediate family members are honorary pallbearers. A reception will follow in the Reception Hall, lower level of the church. A private family interment will take place at The Brandon Cemetery Columbarium, Brandon, Manitoba.
Sophie’s family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and health care workers at the Brandon Regional Health Centre and at the Rideau Park Personal Care Home who gave her loving care.
