Obituary for Walter Robert Pickett

PICKETT: Walter Robert, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 17, 2022, in the Assiniboine Center, Brandon, Manitoba at the age of 84 years. Born on January 14, 1938, in Fertile, Saskatchewan to John and Agnes Pickett. Walter started life on a farm around Tilston, Manitoba, where he grew up and worked various farm jobs until he moved to Melita, Manitoba in the early 1960's. This is where he started his mechanical career working for the Neild Brothers Garage. In the summer of 1961 Walter met Jean Clubb, and the two were married on July 20, 1963, in Melita, Manitoba and where their first daughter Theresa (Terry) was born on May 4, 1964. 1965 gave the family an opportunity to move to Brandon where Walter started a job with Wilton Motors. They purchased their first and only home and in 1968 Shawna was born and Lana followed in 1971. Around 1973 Walter moved to a job with the city of Brandon, and then in 1976 he went to work at the Department of Highways where he stayed, until his retirement in 1998. Walter loved his sports, both televised, as well as, participating in hardball, softball, slow pitch, broomball, curling, and golf. Anyone who knew him, knew he was just a "wee bit" competitive. He was also a very community orientated person and spent hours volunteering at South End Community Center and the Riverview Curling Club. Family was always important to him, and he was always willing to lend a hand to fix or build whatever he could. Sundays were a favourite day as we all got together for a great meal and visits. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Jean, of 58 years, daughters Theresa Pickett, Shawna (Ben) Harkness, Lana Pickett (Kevin), grandchildren Jordan and Malorie Harkness, and Katherine Herlick, sisters Lorrie (Elwin) Smeltz, Rose (Robert) Opper, brother-in-law Marvin Armstrong, sister-in-law Janice (Bill) Woodland, and many nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held on August 20, 2022, at the Columbarium in Brandon. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
